Take Photos the Bride will Treasure Forever

The bridal portrait session provides a number of benefits. It allows you to take photos of the bride in her wedding dress, at a time when she feels her prettiest. As the shoot is conducted before the wedding day, there is less stress involved for the bride. You also have more control when it comes to the location, the time, the lighting and posing.

Plus, the shoot also allows the bride to try out her dress and move around. Similar to a dress rehearsal, she can use the results of the shoot to adjust certain aspects of her dress, hair and makeup for the actual wedding day.

Listen to these words of advice from a professional wedding photographer in Hobart and you will have photos from the shoot that she’ll treasure forever.

Look for a quiet place

Some brides are self-conscious. This may become more evident if you bring the bride to a public area or bring lots of people with you along for the shoot. When photographing the bride, find a serene place where you can give her instructions.

You may bring an assistant to help make the shoot easier and quicker. If the bride decides to bring her mum, sister, friend or her maid-of-honour, you could use them as your assistant. If not, then ask one of our friends to take on the role.

Your assistant can help in holding the bouquet, train, arranging the dress, the bride’s hair and more. A lot of things can happen during the shoot and an assistant can work as your extra pair of eyes and hands.

Take a series of shots

As an experienced wedding photographer, it is advised that you talk to your bride at least a few days or weeks before the photo shoot. Have a list of poses ready although you may still need to ask if the bride is comfortable with doing the more creative types of poses.

Taking photos of the bride (and groom) straight on may always not produce the best images but these will count towards your traditional photos. At the beginning of the shoot, take pictures of the bride (or the couple) looking at the camera and smiling.

Once you have the traditional shots down, you can go for the more fun and creative shots.

Brides want to look their best. When taking photos of the bride, try to find her best side. You may need to get the bride to turn a few degrees to the right or left.

Avoid making the bride look down or shooting up at the bride. This angle will make the chin and nostrils more prominent in the shot. If you are shorter than the bride, what you can do is to bring a ladder or chair to your photo shoot. Stand on it and take the shot from that angle.

Show off her wedding dress

For the bride, the wedding gown may be the most important outfit she will ever wear. She may have spent several weeks or even months looking for that dress. As such, she’ll want to get it photographed well.

Before the shoot, ask the bride what aspects of the dress she likes then make sure that your photos feature those details. If it is the train then make sure you get a few pictures from behind.

Take pictures of the lace, buttons or other unusual aspects of her outfit such as her crown or veil. You could also take pictures of her shoes and accessories if these contain important details as well.

When doing a photo shoot with the bride, try to limit her movement as much as possible. You don’t want the dress to get damaged or dirty before the actual wedding. Bring a white sheet that she can use to stand on and take as many shots from different angles and perspectives as you can. This way, you have several shots for her to choose from without getting her stressed or damaging her dress in the process.
